Adult Orthodontics Q & A

Is there a difference between adult orthodontics and child orthodontics?

There are differences between adult and child orthodontics, but excellent results are possible for either group. To begin, many adults have dental issues that younger people have not yet encountered. They may have mild gingivitis as well as a degree of bone loss.

Some adults also have teeth that are worn down, worsening an overbite. Others lack sufficient space in their mouths to move teeth into optimal positioning, which can require one or more teeth to be extracted. Extractions performed in the years prior to orthodontic treatment can leave areas of bone unsuitable for repositioning teeth.

Root resorption can also be an issue for adults. This occurs when your body absorbs the roots of one or more teeth, leaving them without sufficient anchorage in your bone tissue.

These issues can all be addressed or mitigated with proper treatment. That’s why it’s so important to work with a dentist like Dr. Abar who is skilled in adult orthodontics.

What are the options for adults who don’t want a metallic smile?

Many adults want straighter teeth, but are hesitant about signing on for a gleaming metallic smile for the next 1-2 years. Fortunately, there are options that can give you the smile you’re hoping for without the aesthetics of a silver smile.

One option is Invisalign, a system that uses clear plastic aligner trays to slowly move teeth into proper alignment. Invisalign trays are removed for eating and dental hygiene, and are virtually undetectable when in place.

Danville Orthodontics also offers Clarity Advanced Ceramic Brackets, a system that uses the same approach as traditional metal braces, but with smaller brackets that are almost completely clear. These are far less noticeable than metal brackets, yet yield impressive outcomes.

How do I know if adult braces are a good option for me?

The decision to begin orthodontic treatment is always a personal one, and is something that you should take time to consider. The best way to make an informed decision is to work with a skilled orthodontist, like Dr. Abar, to understand the process, cost, and likely results.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Abar will gather information about your health and dental history, obtain any necessary X-rays or other types of imaging, and discuss your treatment goals. That information allows him to chart out your expected treatment plan, giving you a clear idea of how your smile will change and what is required to reach that goal.

This is your opportunity to ask questions and share any concerns you may have. By the end of the consultation, you should have a firm understanding of how adult orthodontics can help you. You’ll also understand the cost of treatment and the options for covering that investment.

When you’re ready to begin, reach out to Dr. Abar’s office online or by phone to set up your visit.
